Lecturers arrested for assaulting physically-challenged lady

KOLKATA: Two teachers of a free primary school in Joka were arrested on Saturday for allegedly assaulting and humiliating a nine-year-old physically-challenged girl student last week.
The arrest came after the parents of the students staged an agitation demanding punishment to the accused teachers.

On Saturday, on the basis of the complaint lodged by the mother of the child, police arrested the duo. They were, however, granted bail by the court on Sunday.

The girl has severe physical limitation, including speech problems. Because of her disabilities, she can neither move freely nor can she do her routine works.

On March 9, she suddenly fell sick and wanted to drink water. One of the accused teachers stuffed the water bottle into her mouth. This left her completely drenched and traumatised.

During the interval, when her mother came to the school to feed her, she found her sobbing. She then approached the school teacher and asked what had gone wrong with the student. Both the teachers said that she must take her child to different school as she causes disturbance in the class, said police.

Her mother alleged that this was not the first time. The two teachers used to misbehave with the girl. The hapless mother then met the headmaster who assured her of speaking to the teachers. The child’s mother then spoke to other guardians to tell them of her ordeal. They said that they would stage a protest till she gets the justice.

On March 12, the guardians started agitation outside the school premises.

Meanwhile, secretary Ghanashree Bag, Borough 10 chairman Indrajit Bhattacharya and school authorities met at the school to resolve the issues. But the meeting remained inconclusive with the school wanting to save the jobs of two teachers.

The parents of other students intensified the agitation with the demand of expulsion of the accused. Finally, on Saturday the police arrested the accused duo.
