Pregnant girl, 24, ends life after in-laws oppose abortion

TIRUPUR: A 24-year-old from here allegedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire on Sunday after her in-laws opposed her decision to abort the fetus.
According to police, Priya, from Madurai, was in love with and married him about six years ago. She was living without any with her family members at near Mangalam with her husband. Both of them were powerloom workers. The couple has a four and a half years old girl. Recently Priya became pregnant again.

“Priya did not want to have the baby and said so to her in-laws and husband. However, they told her to wait for some time. It seems she was upset about it,” said an officer.

“On Sunday evening, she doused herself with kerosene and set herself on fire. She was rushed to the Tirupur Government Hospital but she was declared brought dead,” added the officer.

“Since the death has happened within seven years of their marriage, concerned revenue divisional officer would conduct an inquiry,” said a senior police officer. The Mangalam police has registered a case and further investigations are on.
