Ashraya residents’ indefinite protest ends inside hours

HUBBALLI: The launched by the Jagadish Nagar Ashraya Residents Welfare Committee in front of the commissioner’s office on Tuesday ended with assurances by the mayor and officials to convene a meeting to consider the long-pending demands of the association.
The protesters’ demands include basic facilities and title deeds to the original beneficiaries of the Ashraya scheme in Jagadish Nagar and other areas.

Some protesters locked the entrance gate of the HDMC commissioner’s cabin. The incident took place when HDMC commissioner and mayor were present in their offices. Saraf, Hiremath, HDMC officials Aziz Desai, Ismail Shirahatti and others met the agitators and convinced them to withdraw the protest. The mayor promised to convene a meeting in two days to discuss the issues in Jagadish Nagar with members of the residents welfare committee in the presence of .

The protest started under the leadership of Premanath Chikkatumbal and continued till the afternoon. The agitators cooked on the road as a mark of protest.
