Beaumont police arrest man they are saying needed to be killed by officers

BEAUMONT — Beaumont police Tuesday announced the arrest of a man who allegedly attempted to provoke officers into killing him by breaking out the windows of a local bus stop while armed with a knife.

Elroy Ruben Saenz III, 33, of Hemet, was arrested last Thursday and booked on suspicion of felony vandalism and resisting arrest, according to a police department social media blotter, which said the suspect was also referred for a psychological examination due to the alleged “suicide by cop” attempt.

Saenz allegedly shattered windows at a bus stop in the 1500 block of 2nd Street Marketplace just before 4:30 p.m., then approached responding officers while brandishing a knife.

Officers “were able to subdue the subject using less-than-lethal force,” and no injuries were reported, according to the blotter, which said Saenz “admitted to officers that he intended to provoke officers into a lethal encounter.”
