MUMBAI: A lottery store owner, who is reeling under heavy debts, repeatedly his wife and three children with knives at their Goregaon residence early on Wednesday, leaving the flat and the passage outside covered with blood. Later, he before the police, saying he had “lost his mind”. All four of his family members have been hospitalized and his wife is critical.
Umesh Gupta (48) ran Rajshri Lottery at Malad (East).

He lived with his 42-year-old wife, two aged 24 and 22, and a 16-year-old son on the seventh floor of a building near Goregaon (West) railway station. One of his daughters is a chartered accountant while the other is studying to be one. Police officials said Gupta had suffered and had borrowed money from various sources but was unable to repay them.

“On Tuesday night, the Guptas had dinner and went to bed around 11.30pm after watching television. Around 1.40am, Umesh woke up and brought out two knives which, cops suspect, he had purchased in advance. He slashed his wife’s throat and then went on to assault her with a knife on her stomach and legs.

His screaming wife emerged from the bedroom bleeding profusely. Umesh then turned towards his daughters, attacking them on their heads. He assaulted his son on the right arm and head. All his children tried to fight back. His son sustained a fracture in an arm,” said a police official. The two knives were recovered from the flat.

Guptas’ neighbours said they were asleep and did not hear the screams. “But a third-floor resident, who was lying down in the passage outside his home, heard them. He asked Umesh, who was climbing down the stairs, about the ruckus. Umesh reportedly told him that a fight was on in a third-floor flat.

Meanwhile, one of Umesh’s daughter staggered out of the house and began to bang the doors of some of the neighbours’ flats around 2am. “We were horrified to find the family seriously injured and rushed them to Siddharth Hospital,” said Manda Berde, who lives on the same floor as the Guptas.

Umesh went to Goregaon police station and confessed to his crime. “He kept sobbing. He said he had lost his mind and was sorry. He had initially planned to kill himself after wiping off the entire family,” said a cop from the police station.

“The Guptas have lived here for two decades. They always kept to themselves. We never heard any raised voices from their house, which is why the incident has left us stunned,” said Berde. The Guptas’ relatives were informed of the crime by the police, and Bindu and her children were moved to a private hospital in Goregaon. The relatives got the bloodstains in the flat and on the passage wiped off.

Umesh has been booked under IPC Section 307 for attempt to murder. Cops will probe where he bought the knives.
