Minor Dalit lady allegedly burnt in UP‘s Ballia district; 5 arrested

VARANASI: A 15-year-old Dalit girl allegedly committed suicide by setting herself afire at in police station area in district on Wednesday night.
A suicide note was also found in her house. The police arrested 5 teenage boys of the same village and booked them under section 306 of IPC for encouraging her to commit suicide. However, the girl’s mother alleged that her daughter was burnt alive by them when she was alone in the home. She had been stalked and harassed by these boys.

According to reports, the girl Sonam, daughter of a labourer, studies in class VIII at local junior high school. Her father lived has gone to to earn living. She lived in the village with her mother and younger brother.

According to her mother, Sonam was very upset when she returned home after appearing in the examination. She was alone in home when the accused burnt her, alleged the mother adding that they had been stalking her for quite sometimes and threatening her of dire consequences to family members. The police were also informed about the matter, but no action was taken, she added. The seriously burnt girl was taken to hospital, where she succumbed to injuries during treatment.

However, the police said that it is a matter of suicide. The Bhimpura SO told TOI over phone that in her suicide note the girl sought action against those who wanted to cause trouble to her family members. “An FIR against fiver persons were lodged under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of IPC, and all of them were arrested,” said the SO adding that it was not the case of any sexual harassment or burning. The body was sent for postmortem.

It was the second case of death due to burns in Bhimpura area in a fortnight. Earlier on March 8, a 40-year-old dalit woman was set on fire by money lenders at Jajauli village in Bhimpura police station area. The seriously injured woman was referred to Varanasi, where she succumbed to burns during treatment. The police arrested two persons under sections 307, 324, 506 of IPC and SC/ST Act.
