India ‘welcomes‘ lifting of Emergency in Maldives, however says considerations stay

NEW DELHI: India on Thursday “welcomed” the revocation of Emergency in Maldives, even as it cautioned that several concerns expressed by the international community “remain to be addressed.”

“While this is one step towards addressing the issues related to the prevailing political situation in that country, a number of concerns expressed by the international community still remain to be addressed,” said the ministry of external affairs in a statement.

The MEA also called upon the government of Maldives to “ensure credible restoration of the political process, as well as the rule of law.”

“We, therefore, call upon the Government of the Maldives to restore all Articles of the Constitution, to allow the Supreme Court and other branches of the judiciary to operate in full independence, to promote and support the free and proper functioning of Parliament, to implement the Supreme Court‘s Full Bench order of 1 February 2018 and to support a genuine political dialogue with all opposition parties,” it said.

Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen today lifted a 45-day state of Emergency on the advice of the security service to promote normalcy in the country, reported AP.

The island nation plunged into crisis when President Yameen declared a 15-day emergency on February 5 and ordered the arrests of two Supreme Court judges on charges of corruption. Subsequently, the three remaining judges annulled the February 1 order of the which had overturned the convictions of political prisoners, including that of its exiled former president , and reinstated 12 MPs ousted for switching allegiance to the opposition.

The Emergency in the island nation was then extended by 30 days to March 22, in the presence of only 38 MPs, despite the requirement that 43 MPs be present during voting.

India had expressed its disapproval of the extension of emergency, saying it did not see a “valid reason” for it.
