5 months on, Khel Mahakumbh winners await prize cash

GURUGRAM: Around 300 participants — between the ages of 16 and 40 years — who won a sports event at the ‘Khel Mahakumbh’, have complained about not receiving the promised prize money.
The competition was organised in 2017 at district and state levels by the directorate of sports. At the district level, 22 events were held, in which players participated under individual and team categories. The 22 events included archery, athletics, basketball, football, gymnastics, handball, hockey, kabaddi, kho-kho, wrestling, boxing, judo, badminton, table tennis, netball, volleyball, swimming, lawn tennis, weight lifting, wushu, kabadi and tug-of-war.

The district sports department was supposed to reward who secured first, second and third places in the tournament with some amount as prize money, but so far, none of the winners have received any. When TOI ed the department, the organisers said they had not been provided full details of the winners, which is why the prize money couldn’t be transferred to their accounts.

Bhupinder Yadav, winner in the archery event, said, “What’s the point of winning a medal? The event happened in November and I haven’t even got a certificate for it. I’d given my bank account details to organisers, and still the promised amount hasn’t been transfered.”

“Right now, the department is in the process of recording the names, bank account numbers, Aadhaar numbers, etc., of all players. Information is being sought from those players who have not furnished their full details. The process will be completed soon and in the coming weeks, the winners will get their dues,” said Paras Ram, district sports officer.
