Cops reward a home to 80-year-old lady

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The sight of 80-year old , trying to fasten a saree at the entrance of a makeshift structure at Chittazhakulam, Azhakulam, Kovalam bypass, led a police patrolling party from Kovalam Janamaithri Police station to enquire more about her.

Leelamma, who lives with her daughter Bindu, now has a proper shelter, thanks to the kind-hearted policemen, who led an initiative to construct the house.

The house was constructed in association with Christ College, Kalluvettankuzhy, in nearly one cent owned by Leelamma, who works as a housemaid to earn a living. The house constructed at Rs 5 lakh, includes a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and sit out.

The key of the house was handed over by Ajith Kumar P, sub-inspector, station to Leelamma in a house warming ceremony held at her new house on Monday. Christ College director Father Thomas and principal were present at the function.

“I was on a patrolling duty, when I saw the old lady in a house made of tin sheet. Leelamma, shared her grievances with us. We found that the mother and her mentally unstable daughter, were living in misery with no one to support them and a secure home was a necessity for them. So, we approached the Christ College authorities, where we had been organizing awareness classes on drug abuse. They readily agreed to fund the construction work,” said Ajith Kumar.

Police officers arranged the construction materials from a local contractor, while the college students also helped in the construction work, which was completed a few days ago.
