Gold price Rs 76 lakh seized from passengers at Chennai airport

CHENNAI: Customs officials at seized 2.4 kg gold, worth Rs 76 lakh, five passengers in the last three days.
On Wednesday morning, two Malaysian passport holders, Cheng Li San, 24, and Goh Chun Wei, 32, who arrived from Malaysia in an flight, were intercepted on suspicion that they might have concealed gold inside their baggage or person. On examination, 10 gold bars weighing 1,485 gram gold bars — worth at Rs 46.5 lakh — were recovered from them.

In another case on Wednesday morning, Thameem Ansari, 37, a resident of Chennai, who arrived from Dubai to Chennai in an flight, was intercepted. During search, two brown-coloured rubbery spread were found wrapped in transparent plastic covers and kept concealed inside the waist area of his trousers. Suspecting the rubbery spread to be of gold, a gold assayer was called in to extract and examine the same, and 385 grams of gold valued at Rs 12 lakh was extracted.

On Monday morning, gold weighing a total of 565 gram and worth Rs 17 lakh was seized from two passengers – one from Dubai and the from Colombo.
