Trainee priest arrested for branding boy’s arms with scorching iron close to Chennai

CHENNAI: Police arrested a trainee Christian priest in Kovalam near Chennai for branding a schoolboy’s hands with hot iron suspecting him of stealing a cellphone.
Police said Ratchagadas, 24, was the caretaker of the St Joseph’s Boys Hostel in Kovalam. The priest inquired the hostel students after his cellphone had gone missing.

The priest narrowed down on a boy, Chinnapparaj Leo, 12, studying in Class VI. The priest questioned him on April 13. As the boy didn’t give him any reply, the priest branded his two hands with a hot iron.

The boy called up his father, Leo, and complained him about the torture he had suffered. Following this, Leo rushed to the hostel and brought his son to Chennai after submitting a complaint to the hostel authorities. The boy was treated in a hospital here.

Later, Leo took his son to the hostel and inquired about what had happened. As the hostel authorities didn’t give him any proper reply, he lodged a complaint with the Kelambakkam police and sought police intervention to take legal action against the hostel authorities.

Based on Leo’s complaint, the police conducted inquiries with the boy and other hostel inmates. Following this, they booked a case against the .

He was remanded in judicial custody.
